Wallace Stegner wrote, “It is the beginning of wisdom when you recognize that the best you can do is choose which rules you want to live by, and it’s persistent and aggravated imbecility to pretend you can live without any.”
When it comes to personal transformation, choosing which rules you want to live by is the beginning of wisdom. I like to share with you what I discovered as five rules that shapes transformation of great and successful people.
- Great and Successful People See Differently
It is easy to see things the way they are. But great and successful people see things the way they can be. Abraham was barren when God saw in him the father of many nations. In fact, he was only a father of one son when God changed his name to a father of many nations (Genesis 17:5). We must learn to see things not as they are, but the way God made them to be. That’s how great and successful people sees. They see things from God’s perspective.
- Great and Successful People Think Differently
Proverbs 23:7 says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” Thinking shapes you. Your life can’t be different from your thinking. It is this understanding that helps great and successful people to think differently. And one major way to think differently is to let your thoughts align with God’s thought (Isaiah 55:8).
- Great and Successful People Speak Differently
You cannot change your experience until you change your words. Your words determine your future. Your word is a pointer to your heart. Your word shows your worth and wants. Great and Successful people always use words carefully. They don’t speak carelessly. God is mindful of how you speak (Numbers 14:28). Whatever God will do to you will be shaped by how you speak in His ears.
- Great and Successful People Choose Differently
Your life is the total sum of your choices. Your choice is personal but it is not private. Choice is the juncture between two destinations. There is no greatness by accident neither is there anyone created by God without a seed of greatness. Our choice makes the difference. The key to our greatness lies in the power of our choice. God desires greatness for all His children. He says we should choose life and the good that is in it (Deuteronomy 30:15,19). When we go for God’s choice, we accept God’s best. To choose differently is to go for God’s choice in all things irrespective of the choices others are making.
- Great and Successful People Act Differently
Greatness demands boldness to act differently. Those who cannot stand out among others cannot stand tall above others. The call to greatness is first of all the call to separation from a common and self indulged life. “Who is on the Lord’s side? Let him come unto me” (Exodus 32:26) is the greatest test of those who will move into greatness with God. Separation from a life of disobedience, unholy pleasure, impatience and worldliness unto God is a true mark of greatness. Dare to be positively different. Be the one who will model Christlike character in the world that is becoming Christ-less in character. Nothing should be done because that is how others are doing it, but because that is the standard laid down by the Lord.
These five rules will shape any life into greatness: See differently, think differently, speak differently, choose differently and act differently.
