Demonstrating Christ-Like Character is True Greatness.

Desire for greatness is not bad contrary to what some people believe. It is good to desire greatness provided it’s a right desire. But greatness is more than having a desire or wishing to be great some day.

Just like my father used to say to us when we were little children that, “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” He told us times without number that to achieve greatness in life, we must be willing to do the ridiculous – not in a negative but positive way. We must be ready to go all out for God. And we must live to serve others.

In the light of these essentials, there are four important things each of us must know about greatness that will position us to experience it.

Someone said, “Attitude is an inward thought that wiggles its way out.” I believe one of the reasons some people are not great is not because God does not want them to be great, it’s because they lack the attitude that make up for greatness.

“Above all things physical, it is more important to be beautiful on the inside…”
― Ellen DeGeneres

Greatness is lived from inside – out. It starts from who we are on the inside and that’s our attitude. Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” If we don’t get our attitude right, we are not ready for greatness. Developing a right attitude, living out godly actions and demonstrating Christ-like Character is true greatness (Matthew 20:26).

Greatness is not a destination we aim at, it is a journey we continue to travel through. Although, greatness has altitude yet it is not meant to be somewhere you wait to reach someday.

The treasure of greatness is in the journey. And the journey is our progressive walk with God. The more of God we know, the more of His greatness that will be revealed in our lives. The beauty of greatness is in its increase. We must be like The Psalmist who prayed, “Thou shall increase my greatness…” (Psalm 71:21).

Our greatness can grow (Daniel 4:22) and nothing is bad about that if only we will remain humble under the mighty hand of God – Who is exceedingly great in power.

Nothing makes great people than obeying God one step at a time. Obedient leaders are great leaders. It does not matter the position they are holding – whether they are recognized or not. Once you learn to obey God one step at a time, That’s true and genuine greatness.

“You will know as much of God, and only as much of God, as you are willing to put into practice.”
― Eric Liddell

Just as Maya Angelou said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” The secret of coming out of defeats of life is persevering faith in the Lord. And that’s true greatness.

A story is told of a runner who came from his country to participate in a race. While the race was going on, he fell, got wounded and could not meet up with other runners. But long after the race was over, the man managed to reach the finishing line and he fell again. The people stood in ovation for him having witnessed his predicament and perseverance. Then, a Journalist walked up to him and asked, “Sir, why did you manage to reach the finishing line when you know you cannot win again?” The man answered, “My country did not send me to take the first position but to finish the race.”

Truly, that’s greatness. It is persevering faith. It is the ability to cross the finish line even when you may not get the first position but when you keep moving in spite of your challenges until you fulfill God’s assignment for your life.

So, anytime you think about greatness, always consider these four essentials…

  • Attitude
  • Journey
  • Obedience
  • Persevering Faith
